You can do anything you want, just write the Java code or script it.

You'll spend about 100 times the amount of effort it takes to upgrade to 3.4. I backported the connector code to 3.3 when I needed it, but the Spring wiring it takes is extensive. Just upgrade. You’re one security bug away from being forced to anyway.

We just had a regression reported, I'll grant you, but it's trivial to work around and is probably among the most serious one we've had in the entire release branch. Upgrading is patching, it's not a major project.
