Hi Peter - thanks for your response

Ideally I’d like the Service Provider to pass the authenticated user to WebDirect and (if my reading of the user attribute documentation is correct) pass the user attribute : email, so WebDirect can identify the user for form submission without needing them to re-authenticate themselves.
