Historical mostly, and the need to override Tomcat SSL trust handling for
back channel communication, which for example does not currently allow for
Tomcat 7 usage without Apache in front.

Depends what you're doing with it. You have to know what you're using it
do to answer specific questions. It's not an assumed requirement.

The documentation is the documentation. It's Java, there are no
OS-specific requirements.
