I think maybe there's some kind of confusion that what the software does
matters, but it doesn't. Anybody hosting a large metadata file (or any
other large file) should be slapping Last-Modified and ETag headers on it,
and should allow for gzip or deflate (or both) because that's just the
right thing to do. Whatever you do will be helpful to some software and
ignored by the rest.
