support for gzip/deflate compression of fetched metadata

Because I tested it, obviously. It has nothing to do with my code, all I
did was set the libcurl option to allow it to do whatever it's built to do.

Both date and ETag caching are supported, so there's nothing to document.
No options to set, etc.
