Shib development team,
I have no idea if the politics of this suggestion are even remotely
feasible, but...
What if InCommon added a $350 "tax" per IDP/SP, with proceeds going back
to the Shib Foundation? This would raise $100k. It is a very reasonable
annual software maintenance price for something as mission critical as
Shib. And if federations in other countries and markets follwed the lead
of paying back "something," it could provide at least a basic model for
supporting this important project...
I wish Gluu had more budget to support the project... Gluu has special EDU
pricing, and I'd be willing to consider adding a fee supplement per IDP
which goes back to the Shib project. But we've only sold 10 universites so
far, so I don't think this would be enough.
thx,
Mike Schwartz

And it seems to me in the particular case of Shib, the first order of importance is to sway Internet2. Tactically, I think it's essential to first do our level best to get I2 to step up more decisively and clearly. I don't want I2 to say, "Well, the Shib Consortium is something that our individual members sign up for. We (I2) don't." That would be a very unfortunate outcome.

However, if the global higher ed and research communities are SEEN to be struggling to support something as ubiquitous and valuable as the Shibboleth project and package, we will have trouble saying "Let's do more open source infrastructure development!"
