Probably with some of the advanced plug points, but it's outside what I am willing to dig into on list outside of member support.

The interface involved is called PairwiseIdStore and you'd have to implement an alternative in Java and get it injected into all the right spots. Theoretically possible if none of the injection points were overlooked.
