Sorry, isn't that what you wrote above you wanted to achieve?
(I feel like I'm being thick here.)

FWIW, you can look around at https://filesender-test.aco.net (the EDS
config is publicly visible as it needs to be evaluated in the browser,
just view source of the HTML to find it) which is a case of going to
the EDS first (it's embedded into the start page) and ending up at the
protected resource (only) after authentication.
Not sure that'll help, though.
