Absolutely.  When we first switched to 3.x, the garbage collection behavior was horrific esp. with respect to the reload of the InCommon metadata aggregate.  Switching to G1 had a huge impact (beneficial). More recently, we switched the InCommon metadata config from the aggregate to MDQ which also has had a tremendously beneficial impact on memory usage and garbage collection behavior.
