If the native hop over to Azure is WS-Federation it may just be a matter of going back and re-implementing the WS-Fed support in the IdP we abandoned out of lack of interest. It's not really hard to implement, though it's also broken old SAML 1.1 and something I don't really think should be left alive anywhere, their code included. But I don't know if that's what the final hop from ADFS to Azure actually is.
