on-prem application

We have a vendor that provides their application for both an on-prem 
(edu hosted) and off-prem (vendor hosted) install.  The only 
documentation they've provided us is their "Shibboleth InCommon 
Integration Customer Details" document.  We are looking to host this 
on-prem, what is the advantage of marring this on-prem install with 
InCommon based metadata, in lieu of treating it as a un-federated 
application that we locally exchange the SP and IdP metadata.
