I don't know how you did the CAS integration, but I believe the correct way to integrate CAS is mod_cas, which is indistinguishable in the simple case from using mod_shib, so the protocol isn't really relevant from the point of view of the application. The goal isn't SAML, it's not to embed anything in the application.
mod_cas or mod_oidc is better than using any SAML library.

We have for many years but using Apache generically and without any significant dependence on the protocol, apart from the ability to pass some attributes for some flexibility.
