The IDP logs the version on startup (provided you find the IDP's
application logs), at least IDPv3 does.
You can also look into the filesystem, e.g. for IDPv3 you'd find
files named 'idp-*.jar' in /opt/shibboleth-idp/webapp/WEB-INF/lib/
that would also give away the version.
For IDPv2 I think it was a file named identityprovider-*.jar in
/opt/shibboleth-idp/lib/
In either case you could also look at/inside the deployed WAR
(e.g. with some unzip tool) and you'll find those JARs in there, too,
detailling the version.
But if you have to ask at all it's likely IDPv2 and that's out of date
and out of support for years now. So brace yourself for the learning
curve ahead of you. Also make good use of local support offerings in
the UK, be they from JISC or from commercial suppliers.
