That only breaks if you're working with a fresh install or you've changed the XML namespace to 3.0. I think your point was fresh installs, not upgrades. I'd hope that there won't be too many fresh installations that run into this before Switch updates their docs.

That's also not entirely accurate, in that the <MetadataProvider> element uses url="..." and not uri="..." as version 2 did. It's broadly the same, but anyone cutting and pasting configuration elements will have issues.
