Possible to create IdP session without going through SP?

Is it possible to create a session for a user in the shibboleth IdP without
going through an SP login screen? I read the section on session
configuration and it says:

> An IdP session is created by default (*idp.session.enabled=true*) upon a
successful authentication event.

So in the shibboleth IdP, do I just need to manually authenticate as a
user? Is there a way to do this?
