question regarding duo.properties and multiple integrations

My apologies for likely not using the correct terminology, but I noted that the example in the docs for setting up multiple Duo integrations utilizes a presumably arbitrary “idp.specialduo” variable prefix/namespace in addition to the standard “idp.duo”. I seem to recall a discussion a few months back about arbitrarily adding something like that due to the potential for collisions. Am I mis-remembering or is this acceptable configuration setup? I expect to have 2-4 different integrations so I can apply different policies in Duo to different groups of apps, so I’m looking for the proper direction (keeping keys in duo.properties vs. duo-authn-config.xml) to set this up.
