Upgrading Windows SP 2.3.1 to 2.6.0

OK if I run the uninstaller and then manually ensure that the *.sso extension is gone, the ISAPI filter is gone and the service is gone and then run the new install and verify those items as correct, it should work?  If not, what do you advise?

>From the SP point of view, but there's no clean way to deal with IIS, the uninstaller does stuff and then the installer re-does the same stuff and the end result in most cases doesn't work out of the box, particularly on IIS 7+. It's not unique to upgrading.
