BTW, did you happen to actually try running it under their current build of 2.4?

There are certainly those that claim/believe that the Apache API is supposed to provide enough insulation from memory management to avoid any runtime library assumptions between the modules and the core. That has not been my experience or anything I particularly cared to investigate but it might be interesting.
