It's an accident of circumstance to some degree that it's basically been done for the next release, as it happens.

What I might do is throw in a simple admin flow that's just a view with links to the various reload and status endpoints, and protect it with an unmeetable access control rule but turn on authn for it. No risk to deployers, but tests authentication out of the box.
