I understand now.
That was my complete misunderstanding and glossing over the ability to test
an IdP with testshib.org.

An argument for the support of some type of login by default:

When setting things up for simple development to mock services provided by
3rd parties where they do not have a development/certification environment
set up, Shibboleth stand-alone gives you a monumental amount of control. 
Being able to have a generic "here I am, go ahead and log in via your basic
configuration" setup that isn't hosted by yet another 3rd party would be
incredibly useful.

That's actually the case I have now.  SSOCircle just simply doesn't have
what I need to fully mock what the end target's IdP does and they do not
allow you to use the production instance to test the solution.
