I was able to reactivate a 32-bit server I have here with a maxed out (~1.8G) heap  by switching to the G1 GC you suggested was more effective at handling the metadata requirements, so I adjusted the guidance to recommend using it, but I'll be honest, I don't have time to dig into any of this stuff and would prefer people that do adjust the recommendations appropriately.
