JVM heap size adjustments

I think the best practice is to use your own container, full stop. And the documentation pretty much says that the changes made to Java won't survive upgrades (I assume that's what it means by "reinstallation"?) so that would be a dealbreaker seemingly.

As far as what the defaults are, I would hope we'd be installing it with the JVM set to operate with the general guidance we give now, but I don't know whether that's the case or how to tell from the source code offhand. Obviously if it runs and logs a lower value, that's a clear answer.
