HttpSession NullPointerException on Apache Tomcat 8.5.4

Apologies for the serious delay on this -- I got caught up in the end-of-summer / start-of-school madness around these parts and this fell off of my radar. The bug has now been filed as https://issues.shibboleth.net/jira/browse/IDP-1028.
