access to DateTool in shib views?

I'd like to be able to access $date from the shibboleth velocity templates,
but I can't figure out where / how to make it available.

I've found some stuff about creating a "toolbox.xml" to register the
classes I want available to velocity, but the IdP doesn't seem to have an
equivalent.

Is it possible to make $date available?
