I wasn't trying to be funny. It's the basic answer. If you don't undertand 
how SAML works, and you don't understand networking sufficiently to 
understand why localhost does or doesn't matter, then you're exactly the 
audience for which the advice "don't use localhost" is targeted.

It's confusing. When you're just starting out, it's a needless 
complication that leads to weird results and fails to teach the concepts 
involved. So don't do it.

If you think I'm being insulting or trying to laugh at you, that's not on 
me. I'm just answering the question you asked. Yes, it's possible. Don't 
do it if you have to ask if it's possible.
