Metadata validation

To all,

I need to validate a vendor's metadata (I have verified that it is well formed).  The current tool that I am using, XML notepad 2007, is driving me crazy.  For some reason, my attempt to add schemas is making it run dog slow and popping up with bizarre errors.  Does anyone have a recommendation or tool for validating metadata files.
