we have lots of SLES 11 SP3 servers working fine with that apache
(prefork) and SP version.

You've installed both the prefork and the worker MPM. Which one do you
use? You could try to use the other one or uninstall the unused one to
see if that makes a difference.

Did you download and install the SP packages from the repository by
hand? Then I would recommend to remove the packages, add the repository
and install them via zypper/yast.

You also should make sure to use the Xerces-C from the SLE SDK 11 SP3
(currently libXerces-c28-2.8.0-29.17.1).
