There's extensive material on that topic in the documentation and since you didn't mention
that you were already familiar with it and what you tried so far,
you'll get just the pointer to the Fine Manual for now:

Short version: Try following referrals; try connecting to the global
catalog port (if you'll find all the attributes there you'll need).

Verifying with some other code just means the other code is behaving
slightly different than the LDAP code the Shib IDP uses.
