Yep, changing relayState to cookie did the trick!

I had thought that sessions were used to persist the destination URL earlier in the process. Thanks for the correction.

possible the in-memory relay state value on the SP is timing out, so you
could just change the relayState mechanism back to cookie and see if that
fixes it.
