Do I need to create a CATALINA_HOME variable?

I've installed Tomcat (apache-tomcat-6.0.39.exe) and I've often seen
reference to a CATALINA_HOME variable.

Do I need and/or is it just a good idea to create this?

I'm going to guess it would be created as a system variable, called
CATALINA_HOME, and not a user variable, right? What's the path?
