IIRC, 2.5.2 included a change to catch the errors caused by the libcurl
mismatch and report them more accurately, but if not, there would be a log
error if the wrong library were used.

I have yet to see any log output.

I still don't understand what Apache you're actually talking about, you
have me thoroughly turned around on that.
