Running install.bat to update login.jsp

I've got a working Shibboleth idp that was set up by a vendor. My experience
is limited but I have done some work on it.
I've updated the login page a few times by running the install.bat and it's
worked fine. It always seemed like a drastic step just to update a few
lines of text. Since we're live with it I get a little paranoid every time I
run it. Is it doing much more than recreating the WAR file? The variables
and jar files should all be the same, right? In case of any failure, what
steps should I take? Place the old war file back in?
We're using ver. 2.3.8. The vendor installed 2.4 but there were issues so
he reinstalled with 2.3.8. The issues resolved, and probably had nothing to
do with 2.4. If I did an update to 2.4, again, what issues might I run into
and how do I restore to 2.3.8? Is it worth updating?
Thanks,
Bill
