Shibboleth library shutting down several times per day

Our testers are reporting problems with a new Shibboleth-SP protected site
(in pre-production) where the sessions are being invalidated often within a
few minutes of authenticating. Looking at the logs, I found several
references to Shibboleth library shutting down (as often as 19 times in a 24
hour period).

shutting down worker thread

There's also an event in the Windows Event viewer (event ID: 7701) if that's
in any way helpful.

I can't think of anything that should be causing the socket to close so
frequently (I'm assuming it's the socket closing that's triggering the
library to shut down, not vice versa). Any idea on how to debug this? Is it
more likely a problem with our environment, than with the Shibboleth
install/config itself? We've had other sites running on the same server for
a few months without this issue.
