Shibboleth authentication Flow for Office 365

Hello All,
We are planning to deploy Shibboleth federation for Office 365. Currently we are using SSO toolkit by Microsoft.Our security team would like to know - 
how the Authentication flow once the user is authenticated through Shibboleth?
Does the credentials of the users are been send to Office 365 in order for user to view mailbox or any other process?
What protocol use to contact Office 365?
Any pointer will be of great help.
