We use RHEL 6 in production (about 40k auth's per day). No problems so far.

Setting logs to DEBUG might provide some additional insight. One thing
I seem to recall getting in the way of startup was forgetting to set
appropriate permissions on some of the IdP directories/files after an
upgrade.
