Managing Shib2 IdP configuration in VCS

Hi Guys,

In my limited experience with Shib2 IdP I have found that I have made 
customizations in the following area:

  * Changes to .../shibboleth-identityprovider-2.4.0/src/main/webapp/*.jsp
  * Changes to .../shibboleth-identityprovider-2.4.0/installation/conf/*.xml

The changes went to several iterations as I learned more about Shib2 IdP.

I would like to track changes to my configuration using a Version 
Control System (VCS) like git.

I suspect I do not want to source control all files under 
.../shibboleth-identityprovider-2.4.0. That leaves the option of source 
controlling .../shibboleth-identityprovider-2.4.0/src/main/webapp and 
.../shibboleth-identityprovider-2.4.0/installation/conf trees separately.

Before I do this I thought to check and see if there are any recommended 
best practices on how to do this. Please share any experience doing this 
sort of thing. If this is a useful topic then I can contribute the 
experience in a wiki page on this if dev team would like.
