Amazon runs their own version of Linux.

Amazon offers one flavor of Linux which they distribute, yes.  They're also perfectly happy to host other editions, including RHEL with the license fees passed on to you.

Amazon's own AMI is not a supported platform at this time.

The following advice from that article:


Under no circumstances should you attempt to install a set of RPM packages built for/with a different OS or version from your own. This will usually lead to unpredictable problems and support issues. Instead, just rebuild the SRPM packages and then you can install them anytime you need them.
