Login metrics from idp-profile.log

Thanks to a lot of help from this list, we have shibboleth-idp up and running (and working too!!) in a limited production environment. I've been tasked to begin gathering metrics related to login on our idp. The only way I can think to do this is to write some scripts that parse through the idp-process.log. I'll have to figure out what the best messages to parse on are. Does anyone have any other thoughts on how to gather/generate any metrics? Looking to determine how many logins occurred per day (or some other time period), both successful and otherwise.
I also need to project how our performance might scale to be able to say how many logins/day (or some other better metric) we can support from the idp side and what the ldap backend can handle. Really out of my league on this one.
Any thoughts and/or guidance are most appreciated if anyone has been through this process before.
