Which software is right?

Your advice is very much appreciated. I will do that. 
I do know they use the same login credentials to connect and that our active directory technician gave them something like cn=students, cn=users, dc=univ, dc=edu   or dn......

I asked my supervisor and he is not sure if Kerberos is being used in our active directory, since I am not familiar with AD I did not know if Kerberos was an automatic part of the AD system or not. Our AD technician will be back tomorrow for me to ask.

Before introducing any change there I'd try to find out where and how exactly subjects are currently authenticating for the resources part of/"behind" the portal (to each service? to a central point? via HTTP basic or digest out? etc.) You'll need this info anyway when you want to make all these resources available via SAML to external subjects, -peter
