Before introducing any change there I'd try to find out where and how
exactly subjects are currently authenticating for the resources part
of/"behind" the portal (to each service? to a central point? via HTTP
basic or digest out? etc.)
You'll need this info anyway when you want to make all these resources
available via SAML to external subjects,
