CIC CI group promoting IdP support of ECP with Basic Auth for Shib on the command line

The CyberInfrastructure subteam of the CIC (Big 10 +) IdM group wants to encourage more CIC IdPs to support ECP with basic auth. This is suitable for a number of command-line scenarios common to research environments.

Today, ECP support by IdPs is rare.  So part of the job at hand is to take away the mystery and provide the clearest possible explanation and guidance for IdP admins.  The basic sources of information include the links listed below, but we are looking for more material from which to assemble our case materials.  Any help, especially in the form of shared experiences, would be most welcome.
