new to shib: incommon affiliate or roll-your-own?

Hi,

I'm just starting to look at Shibboleth implementation for our site.
Some questions on basic technical
implementation:

a) Can the IdP and SP be on a separate server that our other web
servers then reference, or does the
software have to be installed on any public-facing web server, aka
"www.colby.edu"?

b) I have been looking at http://www.incommonfederation.org/affiliate/
and wondering about Gluu or
Fischer.  Does anybody use thes affiliates?  Happy with them (answer
offline if you wish)?  Or do
most people roll-your-own Apache/tomcat?
