SP modifying attributes before presenting them to environment for appllication to use?

Is there any method in the Shibboleth SP that can used to modify an attribute before presenting it in the CGI environment.

Eg.
Can value of EPPN be subject to a text transformation rule before setting REMOTE_USER?
