AIX ironically had the most "real" support for shared libraries of any of
the Unices, but because it was more Windows-like, it had terrible support
in the GNU autotools suite for a long time. I have no idea if that's
changed.

Yes. I couldn't even get OpenSSL built. That was probably around 2004-2005
or so.
