Ping is not a reliable means of verifying protocol level access, it only
says really that the logical path exists.

Find a tool, preferably a Java based one, to verify you can connect to
your LDAP server and make a successful query from your machine. I want to
say Shib includes a tool for this, search the wiki for references to it.
