A crash? That would suggest there's something about the patches, but I
have a 2008 Server that appears to be fully patched and nothing like
that's been happening. However, it is 2008, not 2008 R2.

That would be a very different error, you'd get a failure to run the EXE
because of a missing DLL. Your log appeared to show an actual fault.

The Visual Studio 2010 SP1 runtime is the one used now. The
redistributable packages for both architectures are posted on the download
site, as well as available from Microsoft's site.

The documentation outlines the requirement for installing the runtime if
the postinstall ZIP is used to upgrade an older release.
