endless shibd processes

Hey all,

I recently updated my Shibboleth Service Provider to 2.4.3_0 via
macports (...it's a OS X server 10.5.8).

Funny thing:
A new shibd process is started about once per second and never terminates.
I have thousands of shibd processes running after the machine has been
up for a few hours!

The machine is on a limited network (it's a development- and testing
server), so there are not even any users trying to login via
shibboleth.

Any idea why this might be happening, or how I can even start to troubleshoot?
