Difference between "lite" versions and regulars ones

Hi,
I'm sorry if this has been asked many times, but I have been looking
over the Internet for hours and I haven't found any satisfying answer.
As part of Moonshot, we are using libshibresolver, libshibsp, opensaml,
etc. for parsing SAML assertions and resolving attributes. I have
noticed there are "-lite" versions for many of these libraries, and I'm
not sure what's the difference between them (if any), or if both
complement each other.
For the XMLTooling-C, this page
https://wiki.shibboleth.net/confluence/display/OpenSAML/XMLTooling-C
indicates that the lite version is without security support, but that
both need to be built anyway. Are the rest of -lite versions exactly the
same, that is, a version of the library without security support?
Can I use the -lite version as a replacement for the regular version
when linking from Moonshot?
Best regards,
