No, it's not even close.

Yes.

That depends entirely on what IdP implementation you pick and how your applications works and why you're trying to do this. And there is nothing worthwhile to study to learn SAML but the standard, which is why what you're trying to do is a bad idea.
If you're trying to use Shibboleth, the IdP documentation includes material on the authentication pieces and how to integrate with it.
