Actually it probably was just the simple lack of IDs in the action tests, nothing complex, just mechanical/annoying.

Maybe there was also a concern that IDs should be unique across the running system, and that's not a compatible use for this information with prototypes in most cases, which probably is why I suggested it made less sense for prototypes.
